Most of us grew up hearing the story of Gideon and his three hundred brave soldiers who routed a much larger Midianite army by using torches and trumpets to trick the Midianites into thinking they were being attacked by a massive enemy force. Unable to see clearly in the darkness of the night, the Midianites turned on each other and fled.
One of the keys to that amazing victory is found in Judges 7:21, where we learn that victory came “while each man held his position around the camp.” Gideon needed every one of his soldiers in their place to achieve victory over a much larger foe.
Summer is here bringing a change of schedule for students and parents and time away from work for many weary employees. I won’t be surprised to hear that a number of our people are away from St. Andrews on a given Sunday due to family vacations and summer activities. But something else happens each summer that offers our church an important opportunity we can’t afford to miss.
Summer is a time when many people who are seeking a church home visit churches to decide where they will put down new roots to worship and serve. That’s why we need to approach this summer with a “Gideon attitude.” We need each person in his or her place each Sunday so our guests can experience the worship, fellowship, and ministry that make SABC so special. Enjoy your vacation trip. I’ll do the same. But don’t take the summer off from worship and ministry at the very time that some new friends are deciding whether this church family will become their church family. Be in your place. Keep our church life strong this summer. Working together, God may give us some wonderful victories.
