SABC Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School at St. Andrews Baptist Church is the most exciting week of the summer on our campus! Each year our loving volunteers take our children on an adventure like none other. We learn about our Savior through skits, Bible stories, music, and crafts. VBS is for children ages 4 years -6th grade (completed). We look forward to you being a part of our VBS this year.

The St. Andrews Community CTI Basketball Camp is a week-long summer camp for 3rd through 6th graders.  Operated out of two school gyms as well as one church gym since 2001, the camp serves 100 or more campers each summer using an average of 50 youth and adult volunteers.  Drills are conducted in the morning, teaching them how to dribble, pass, shoot, and defend.  Their skills are then put to the test in afternoon game competitions where every camper is assigned to a team who competes in an age appropriate league.  Daily themes emphasizing team play, good sportsmanship, encouragement, growing and improving daily, and looking for the real victory in every day’s activities are recognized by rewarding each camper with treats they are sent home with at the end of each day.

In 2006, the basketball camp was combined with the church’s Vacation Bible School (VBS) program.  CTI Campers meet in the mornings with their coaches, do a light “warm-up” and then head to the sanctuary to begin the VBS portion of the day.  Their recreation time in VBS is conducted in the gym with basketball skills training.  Upon the completion of the VBS program, the CTI campers enjoy lunch in the fellowship hall followed by basketball games in the respective gyms.

Each day during lunch, guest speakers address the camp highlighting the day’s theme.  Well known and well respected athletes of all sports are utilized as well as youth leaders, coaches, and national speakers.  The highlight of the day is when the lunch time is quiet as the campers and youth helpers are being 100% engaged in hearing what the speaker is saying.

The most rewarding part of the camp is seeing the campers smile and respond to the “coaching” that is being provided…not in the sense of basketball, but of life lessons.  Also we are blessed and affirmed in holding the camp when we see campers return after the 6th grade and ask to be a coach for the camp.  Approximately two thirds of the youth that come and help with the camp year after year were once CTI Campers.

This camp is primarily being held for those children who cannot afford a camp experience.  Teaching life lessons of winning and losing, sitting on the bench, responding to authority, and being timely and respectful are lessons the campers go away with regardless of their won and loss record on the court.  Although the majority if not all of the campers may never play competitive basketball in their school or beyond years, they will be able to apply the lessons learned from this one week of camp in their daily life.
