Fred, a native of Greenville, is a graduate of Furman University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Having served churches in South Carolina, Kentucky, Georgia and North Carolina, he and his family came to St. Andrews Baptist Church in 1987. As Minister of Music, he leads a wide-ranging program for preschoolers through senior adults involving choral, instrumental music and worship leadership.
Fred is married to Cindy, a public school teacher working with preschoolers with special needs, and their families. They have two daughters: Judith DeFoor, an elementary school music educator living in Athens, GA; and Clare Eggleston, also an elementary music educator in Athens. Clare is married to Travis, and they have a daughter, Maggie, and a son, Reece. Fred enjoys grandparenting, movies, Andy Griffith TV shows, and yard work as areas of special interest.
“I love ministering at SABC because of the opportunities that come my way to talk with, relate to, and serve alongside people whom God has gifted with different personalities, callings and interests. That certainly comes in handy as I lead music ministry groups involving preschool ages through senior adults.
I am passionate about choral music, and the power choral music has in worship to move and inspire, and to facilitate spiritual growth. I am passionate about family! Our daughters grew up at SABC, which nurtured their gifts in music and leadership. My wife Cindy and I have entered the wonderful world of “grandparenting”. Granddaughter Maggie was our first, and she became big sister to Reece in fall 2015. As other grandparents would attest, a brand new world of love, relationships and fun has engaged our family, and we enjoy it immensely.
My wife and I are graduates of Furman University, and enjoy all things Furman. For 2015-2017, I am serving as Furman Singers Alumni Association Board President. It’s a great way to stay connected to and serve my university, and to stay connected to many friends! We enjoy music, reading, trying to stay in shape, and raising a poodle puppy, Opie (yes, I am an Andy Griffith Show fan!).”
